佘山天主教堂被誉为“东亚第二大教堂”。初建于清同治十三年（公元1871年），由法国传教士所建，后又几次翻修，现在的教堂是1925年扩建而成。此堂为欧洲“巴洛克”风格建筑，融希腊、罗马、哥特建筑艺术于一炉，部分建材与装饰采用中国传统建筑手法。天主教堂与山融为一体，轮廓直辖市自然，堂红山绿相映成辉。整个建筑平面呈拉丁式十字形，充分体现了建筑美学上右对称中不对称的美感。教堂内设3000个座位，可容纳近4000名教徒，而且音响效果极佳。大殿正祭台用大理石砌成，殿窗部分镶嵌五彩玻璃，顶部盖以碧 色的琉璃瓦。高耸的钟楼，按一定音符排列着8只大钟，塔尖高38米，是由紫铜铸成的圣母像，高8米。圣母高举双手呈十字状的小耶稣，寓意欢迎各地前来的朝圣者。1942年罗马教皇曾将佘山天主教堂封为“圣殿”，成为我国天主教徒朝觐的圣地。从山脚到山顶的曲折小路上有147座苦路亭，每亭中有一幅耶稣受难浮雕，还有3座圣亭和一个中堂，逐级向上的苦路把苦路亭、圣亭，中堂及山顶教堂联成一体。信徒们到佘山朝圣时，沿着曲折的苦路逐级而上，领略耶稣代人受难的经历。 rn 佘山天主教堂建于佘山山顶，系法国传教士所建，其建筑特点为总体设计山与建筑为一体，色彩协调自然；教堂融希腊，罗马，哥特式建筑艺术于一炉，部分采用中国传统手法，可谓中西合璧；宏观上充分体现了建筑学上对称中不对称的美学原则；教堂雄伟宽阔，堂内讲话不用扩音器便具有扩音作用，又无回音干扰。由于佘山天主教堂的宏伟壮观，1942年罗马教皇将其敕封为“圣殿”。信徒到佘山朝圣，沿苦路拾级而上，领略耶稣代人受难的经历，获得宗教感情上的升华。每年5月的朝圣日，每天都有来自全国各地的信徒上山朝圣。rnrn |
